Integrate Safety is dedicated to promoting and implementing robust safety measures in the construction industry, emphasizing the importance of fall protection following a recent case. Prosam Building Services Pty Ltd, a Wattle Glen builder, faced fines totaling $80,000 for failing to manage fall risks, including work at heights exceeding 10 meters.
The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court convicted the company of four charges related to the failure to provide and maintain a safe working environment. Fines of $20,000 each were imposed for three charges of failing to reduce the risk associated with a fall from height, and an additional $20,000 was levied for performing high-risk construction work without a safe work method statement (SWMS). The company was also ordered to pay $6,211 in costs.
Integrate Safety can assist businesses like Prosam Building Services in avoiding such penalties by ensuring comprehensive fall protection measures are in place. WorkSafe inspectors found workers on second and third-story roofs without fall protection during a visit to a St Kilda building site. The lack of guardrails, unsafe access via scissor lifts, and insufficient protection around openings were noted, highlighting the need for proactive fall prevention.
Integrate Safety recommends the implementation of passive fall prevention devices, such as guardrails, scaffolds, or safety mesh, to mitigate risks. These cost-effective measures can significantly enhance worker safety and prevent accidents. By eliminating the risk where possible, using appropriate devices, and ensuring the preparation of SWMS, businesses can create a safer working environment, complying with regulations and avoiding financial penalties.
