Three companies are facing charges after a tragic incident in August 2023, where a worker was fatally crushed while operating an elevated work platform (EWP) at a construction site in North Blackburn. The incident has led WorkSafe Victoria to charge a plumbing company, a principal contractor, and an equipment hire firm for alleged breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
According to WorkSafe, the companies failed to provide and maintain a safe working environment and ensure that the plant was without health risks. This incident highlights the critical risks associated with mobile plant operation on worksites, especially when safety controls are overlooked or poorly managed.
WorkSafe Executive Director Sam Jenkin reinforced the importance of rigorous safety practices around EWPs and other high-risk equipment. Employers and contractors must implement proper risk assessments, enforce safe work procedures, and ensure all operators are trained and competent.
