Companies fined after steel plate falls from high-rise

L.U. Simon Builders Pty Ltd was fined $25,000 and ordered to pay $5,461 in costs for failing to ensure workplace safety. Rigtech Pty Ltd was fined $20,000 and ordered to pay $7,441 in costs for failing to ensure non-employees were not exposed to safety risks. In March 2022, a manual drop flap fell from a hoist at a construction site managed by L.U. Simon Builders, nearly hitting a worker. The court found that L.U. Simon Builders did not reduce the risk of falling objects and Rigtech failed to inspect the drop flap properly. WorkSafe emphasized the need for stronger safety measures to prevent falling object injuries, which injure over a hundred Victorian workers annually.
